The date of Easter 2004 - 2010Originally, Easter was celebrated at the time of the Jewish Passover. Over the years, the Christian church developed its own method of calculating Easter. When the calendar was reformed, the Western churches based their Easter dates on the new Gregorian calendar, while the Eastern churches continued to base their dates on the old, Julian calendar.
The table below gives the date of the first full moon after the March Equinox*, and the dates of the Jewish Passover and Eastern and Western Easter for the years 2004 - 2010.
*Note: The March Equinox (March 19 - 21) is the day when the geometric centre of the Sun's disk crosses the equator, moving North, and is above the horizon for 12 hours, everywhere on Earth. This traditionally signals the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Similarly, the September Equinox (September 21 - 24) is the day when the geometric centre of the Sun's disk crosses the equator, moving South, and is above the horizon for 12 hours, everywhere on Earth. This traditionally signals the beginning of autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, and of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. An orrery is a model of the solar system. In the past, the orrery was one of the instruments that might be used by astronomers attempting to determine the date of an equinox.
