Now that I'm weighing myself every day, first thing in the morning and last thing at night, I'm noticing that I'm quite prone to sudden weight gains of up to two kilos (4 1/2 pounds). Fortunately, I'm using 'body fat' scales. They should really be called 'hydration scales' because the 'body fat percentage' that the scales show is not just affected by your body fat, but also by your hydration, the amount of fluid in your body (and its also affected by wet feet!).
So my 'body fat percentage' is always lower at night than it is first thing in the morning, when I haven't had a drink for seven or eight hours. And when I get a sudden weight gain of 2 kilos, lo and behold, my 'body fat percentage' also drops significantlly. When that 2 kilos disappears suddenly, the 'body fat percentage' is suddenly back up again.
This tells me that the sudden weight gain is fluid retention, not fat, because if it was fat, the 'body fat percentage' would move in the same direction as my weight, not in the opposite direction.
Now some of the things that can cause a sudden weight gain through fluid retention:
- salt
- food allergies and food sensitivities
- hormones
- some medications
- hot weather
- changes in the weather
I notice that I'm very weather sensitive, and almost any change in the weather can trigger fluid retention for a day or two. And if the weather keeps fluctuating, so does my weight!

Well the two kilos that turned up overnight, slowly disappeared over two or three days. I suspect the sudden weight gain was purely fluid retention from the salty pancetta.Hmm, could this be one of the reasons why bacon and ham are banned on the Rosedale diet?I have to admit, that given
No! How did this happen? Small daily fluctuations are to be expected, but two kilos? All that I ate that was *slightly* different was a spinach salad that I ordered for a restaurant lunch. The salad had spinach, avocado, pine nuts - all OK on the diet - and on the top, were
My first three weeks on this diet were quite exciting, because every day I would get on the scales and see a loss. I hadn't seen that sort of weight loss on a diet since I was in my twenties. But in week four, although I haven't made any significant changes really (didn't
