I've been on lots of diets in my time.

When I was young, most of the popular diets were low carb, they nearly all worked - at least for a while.  I never had all that much weight to lose, so I don't know how they would have worked over longer periods of time

Then my thyroid stopped working, I put on a *LOT* of weight, and suddenly losing weight became a lot harder.  Low fat diets were the recommended way to go.  I went on the ultra-low-fat Piritikin diet, and only managed to lose about 5 kilos or so (about 10 pounds), then went on a long stall - around 2 years! - until I finally gave up on low fat dieting, and dieting in general.

A few years later, (and even heavier) I tried the 'Carbohydrate Addicts Diet'.  This diet looked balanced and 'doable', and I thought it was worth a try. I lost more weight than I did on low fat, but still only around 15 kilos (about 33 pounds) - unfortunately, not nearly enough. Then another loooooong stall, and eventually I gave up again, and eventually gained it back, plus some more.

Every year, I had to take steroids for my allergies, and every year I gained more weight.

I was very large, and very resistant to losing weight.

Then Gary was diagnosed with diabetes, and we went on a low carbohydrate diet to control his blood sugar (Bernstein - similar to Atkins). Once again, I lost around 15 kilos and stalled.

But this time I didn't give up low carbing - it became a lifestyle.

The good news was that on a permanent low carb diet, I was able to more or less maintain my weight.  Even when I was on steroids, I only gained a relatively small amount.  The bad news was that I wasn't losing any weight either.

I tried Atkins induction.  Two weeks on strict induction.  A typical day: Sardines  for breakfast.  Hard boiled eggs and salad for lunch.  Steak and salad for dinner, followed by artificially sweetened jelly (jello) and whipped cream.  Most people will lose weight on this kind of diet.

After 2 weeks, I'd lost half a kilo (about 1 pound) which reappeared immediately, once I went back to slightly higher carbing.

So I was beginning to doubt whether any healthy diet, would enable me to keep losing weight for long enough to get down to a 'normal' weight again.

Eventually I came across the Rosedale diet, and at first I thought there was no way I'd want to live on this even more restricted diet.  But of course, eventually I gave it a try.

Yes, I did hit a couple of plateaus, a couple of times several days have passed, or even a week, with no weight loss.  And a couple of times I've had that mysterious sudden 2 kilo gain (more on that in a later post).

But the big news is that I've now lost 18 kilos!   Thats over 40 pounds!

Yaaay!  Maybe this diet will keep working for the longer haul!

This is really great news! Thanks for posting. I’m really impressed that the diet seems to be working for you… I’m now considering getting the book (sigh, yet another diet book!)

My thyroid is also dodgy and I take thyroxine 100mcg, but what i have really found out is that there’s no way I can lose without lots of exercise. I don’t know why this is but there you go. I’ve also had a fairly good result doing intermittant fasting (eating once a day in the evening, all you can eat, but LC) and this works really well for me.

I like your 40lb loss very much so will check out the book. Thank you!
